The KPC generosity was evident last week when KPC Board of Directors led by the Chairman Mr. John Ngumi and the acting Managing Director Mr. Joe Sang presented a generous donation of 10 million Kenya shillings to the First Lady Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta to go to her Beyond Zero campaign.

The campaign is the First Lady’s initiative to raise funds to improve healthcare across the country by providing mobile clinics to help deliver expectant mothers in all 47 counties across the country. While receiving the donation, Mrs. Kenyatta was grateful for KPC’s exemplary show. She was humbled by the kind of generosity that KPC had exhibited during this year’s Beyond Zero fundraising drive. This was the second contribution that the Company was making towards the campaign having donated 10 million Kenya shillings in 2014 for the purchase of a mobile clinic for Marsabit County.

As part of the fundraising efforts towards this noble campaign of increasing access to better maternal and child healthcare, the third edition of the First Lady’s Half Marathon (FLHM) took place on March 6, 2016, at Nyayo National Stadium. The event was attended by over 40,000 participants, including 10 from KPC, who ran in various categories namely wheelchair /tricycle, 2km, 5km, 10km, and 21km. It is good to note that all the KPC participants finished their respective categories and were awarded glittering medals.

“I had not prepared as well as I would have wanted and some parts of the course were a bit challenging. But I am glad that I finished,” said Rosemary Lusuli of IT department who completed the 21km run under two hours. Rosemary is a regular participant of the FLHM because she supports the First Lady’s steadfast efforts to improve the lives of Kenyan mothers and their children. Not to be left behind was Richie Wambua of Finance department who also finished the 21km race in one hour and forty-five minutes. This was his first time to participate in the FLHM despite being an avid runner. He told Kenpipe News that he chose to take part because he believes that this is a noble cause and didn’t mind spending his Sunday supporting it.

On her part, the First Lady – who took part in the 10 km category – thanked those who came out to participate and support the noble cause. ‘Every single runner here today is a champion and because of you, the remaining 11 counties will have mobile clinics to support our mothers. This is your victory,’ Mrs. Kenyatta told an enthusiastic crowd at Nyayo National Stadium after the marathon race which included the Deputy President William Ruto, Rwanda’s First Lady Jeannette Kagame, several cabinet secretaries, and other leaders. The First Lady announced that with the success of the campaign, partnerships have already been established with 36 Counties to support the stocking and refurbishment of the already existing Beyond Zero mobile clinics to take healthcare access to the next level.

The Beyond Zero Campaign initiative is a unique and first Public-Private Partnership venture of this scale in the country focusing on maternal, neonatal and child health including HIV prevention, treatment, and care.
